Qualitative and Quantitative Methods Qualitative and Quantitative Methods Qualitative observational research method will be most suitable in this context because, it doesnt not only involve going out into the field and observing the students but also the researchers role, defining the research question, identifying the theory that drives the research, selecting qualitative research tools, analyzing and reporting data and finally writing the final research report.
It is vital for the researcher to determine the role(s) to play, in order to facilitate the study and willingly accept the students . By observing the students you already have a position in the particular society before you even commence the role of the observer. The students must examine their own subjectivity and put into consideration, that by participating, it might lead to either sympathetic or hostile interpretations of the students. The researcher in the other hand should try and be part of the student community and try adopting the roles as students.
“The qualitative observational researcher must determine what underlying theory or model he/she should inform the research, by either building an earlier study, or formulating a new theory of conducting the study” . In designing the qualitative observational study, selecting how and when data will be collected is very important. One of the prime tools of ethnographic research study is the use of field notes. The students may basically start on with blank notebooks and write down everything that goes on or some may either use audio or video tapes. Others begin with a list of categories of behavior to be noted. Works best when the research in question is already defined.
Finally, the researcher should analyze the data and write the research report. The research’s work culminates in the synthesizing and interpretation of the data into comprehensible form and enlightening the whole writing. Even though these steps mark the culmination of the researchers work, it shouldn’t be assumed that they are reserved for the very end of the whole study.
The very end stage is the analyzing and writing stage, where the researcher finally ends their own story and the story of the students. This represents the ultimate goal of the qualitative research, where the produce should provide a clearer understanding of the student’s behavior; this will help in better understanding the student’s behaviors; however, “categories should be flexible and modifiable throughout the study” .
