Construction Safety Power and Influence Power and influence are the necessary and omnipresent features of an organization. Without these two factors,a great deal of what gets materialized in organizations might never be accomplished. But power can also be misused and influence can have an impact on the organizational success or smooth flow of organizational structure (Pollock, n.d.).
Power is the aptitude of an individual, team, or organization to influence others. The main source of power is legitimate, reward, coercive, expert and referent. Influence is any behavior that endeavor to modify someone’s attitudes or behavior. Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and Pixar Animation Studios, is renowned for influencing people through his expressiveness, which depict them into his “reality distortion field” (Steven & Et. Al, 2008).
Suitable influence approach depends on, organizational position, influencer’s power base, cultural values and expectations and age cohort. Power and influence can coexist depending upon the organizational position and also with a person’s ability to influence others (Steven & Et. Al, 2008).
Power is the source that forces the ability to influence. The CEO Bernard Ebbers and CFO Scott Sullivan of WorldCom with other executives carried out the biggest accounting fraud by using assertiveness, influencing performance as political strategy to protect their financial interest and through information control. Luke Duffy a trader of National Australia Bank, with his power and influence, he and his colleagues created a loss of $350 million. From the examples it is observed that these people were able to influence others and if looked properly they all had a position and power. Their power and position made them practice the influencing tactics for their interest in the organizations (Steven & Et. Al., 2008).
