Effective Writing For A Professional Setting – Assignment Example

RE: Effective Professional Writing Professional writing is essential to communicating in today’s world. Emails, memos, and letters are used regularly in business. Professional writing must be effective in order to persuade, communicate, and make contacts. Some tips to effective professional writing are research, culture awareness, and a little common sense.
Research is a must. Whether researching a new contact’s email or a company’s inventory, research is knowledge. “Research is crucial so that you obtain the right information” (Kolin, 44). A potential contact does not want to be addressed as ‘Dear Sir’ if they are female. Having the correct information is the first step to professional writing.
It is important to remember that not recipients of your writing are the same culture. I looked into my email address book. Jew, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and many others are present in my contact list. I have contacts from all over the world. When emailing it is important to remember cultural differences, or offending a business contact might occur. It is important to respect cultural differences (Kolin, 87).
A little common sense also goes a long ways. A good rule to follow is not to write anything you would not want your mother to see. Grammar and writing styles must be followed. If the receiving party is in the U.K., Australia, or another country, the grammar styles of the receiving country should be used. If in person local customs would be followed, it is the same in written communication.
Ethically professional writing should agree with societal norms. An example would be a memo written to Palestine Authority. Although the local customs revere suicide bombers, local customs in America do not believe this practice is ethical. Thus it would be unethical for an American to support this practice for business practices. It does not matter that a lucrative business deal will be achieved through this affirmation, being ethical is more important.
