H1-B Visa – Assignment Example

Running Head: H B Visa Q: What are your thoughts about the H1-B visa, given the high rates of unemployment in the U.S. today? Does the H1-B program solve staffing problems, or does it exacerbate unemployment?
U.S employers have always been praised for their ability to attract the crème da crème from across the world. It has been a matter of huge national pride that some of the brightest and the best are working under U.S employers. While foreign workers bring home the right skills and expertise needed, they leave the local workers deprived of their jobs. At the moment, approximately 181,000 foreign workers, enter United States every year on H-1 and H-2B.
Even though H-1B program has been successful in bringing in the best possible engineering and technological talents from all over the world, it has exacerbated unemployment. It has led to layoffs of local workers because employers are unwilling to let go of talented foreign expertise at the cost of local expertise. Foreign workers are also willing to work at lower salaries, which make them an even more viable option for the employers.
Explain why unconscious bias is a serious consideration for Human Resource Managers, with respect to selection and placement.
Unconscious bias is a serious consideration in selection and placement because it impacts decision making power of human resource managers to choose the right talent for the right position. The subconscious bias has existed over the last several decades now. It is this un-conscious which has denied women and minorities their dues in the employment context.
Unconscious bias remains a serious consideration for HRM managers because of the nature of work places today too. They are more team oriented and rely on subjective evaluation processes. This makes the un-conscious bias even more vulnerable and influences employment decision making.
Selection and Placement Methods:
The two methods that I would opt for in selection and placement would be:
1. Testing
2. Situational Interviews
Testing gives the employer all information he needs before he makes a selection and placement decision. This information is important to assess how well suited is the candidate for a particular job. It tests his thinking style and behavioral traits.
Situational Interviews are in-depth interviews. They give greater insight into the personality of the candidate. How is he likely to respond in different situations, what is his working style, how adaptable is he and what are his weaknesses. They are very effective in determining if the candidate is indeed the right choice.
