Introduction to business My initial reaction to the question: are leaders born or can they be taught is that both inborn traits and learned or acquired qualities can make good leaders.
According to Rosenau (2004), leadership is the result of extensive expectations, considerable followership, and limited discretion (Rosenau, 2004). According to Victor (2009), culture can play an important role in shaping the leadership styles of a person. In his opinion, variables like language, environmental and technological considerations, contexting, authority conception, nonverbal communication behavior, time conception etc can affect the communication and leadership styles of a person (Victor, 2009). Quinn Mills (2005) has mentioned that the ability to energize the people, deep political involvement, adaptability etc are some of the factors which can affect the leadership styles significantly (Mills, 2005).
Some of the successful leaders from the past 50 years are Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill etc whereas the successful leaders of the past 25 years are Indira Gandhi, Bill Clinton, Deng Xiao Peng etc. The current successful leaders are Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Barrack Obama etc.
Some of the general characteristics of the leaders are dedication, hard working, temperament, patience, good communication abilities, decision making abilities at the appropriate times, ability to motivate the followers etc.
Individuals can become better leaders if they have the ability to convince the followers about their vision and mission. Moreover they should show the way of reaching the target to the followers.
Individuals can be good leaders because of the inborn traits and also because of the learned qualities.
