Abstract
This paper summarises a published article that analyses the evolution of management theories and their implications on today’s management practices. Supporting the idea of leadership and participative management, this paper also gives a brief account of the impacts different theories have had on the functions of management. The article also highlights the challenges of managing diversified and technical workforce in the upcoming century.

Past and Present Management Theories
History of management is replete with a number of theories that have evolved over a period of time. The basic authority structure of an ideal organisation was given in early nineteen hundreds. Since then theorists have tried to refine the ever evolving concept of management on the basis of organisational needs.
Nineteenth century witnessed introduction of worker management approach through incentive and scientific systems. While incentive theory relied on repercussion approach, scientific system divided the organisational goals into simpler and achievable tasks to obtain desired output. Scientific management concept was later supplemented with the idea of optimising resources. With the start of new millennium, focus shifted towards human behaviour studies. Theorists stressed that communication and job satisfaction played key roles in motivating workers. Different communication styles were also defined. Leadership qualities were considered vital for achieving motivation among employees. Participative management was recommended for addressing human needs. The idea of situational leadership was also introduced to cater initial individual motivation.
In the early nineteenth century, planning, organising, leading and controlling were considered to be the functions of top management. However, with ever growing emphasis on motivation, organisations now encourage employees’ participation at every stage, be it setting challenging goals or exercising control through two way communication.
As the dawn of new millennium marks technological revolution and globalisation, business has gone borderless and organisations now deal with various cultural mix. Although the basic infrastructure remains conventional, organisations have become lean and technologically advanced. All these challenges require today’s managers to evaluate the management theories in perspective of present day requirement.
