Political Home Work – Assignment Example

Exxon Mobil is the largest American energy company. From oil and gas explorations to coal mining, Exxon Mobil has a variety of interests. This American company is in the league of a handful of top companies. The profits of Exxon Mobil were over 11 billion American dollars. Despite this profit, Exxon Mobil spends little on renewable or alternative energy. More money is spent on lobbying Congress and executive bonuses. Exxon Mobil is getting rich legally, but is their actions ethical? It is hard to tell, if you do not know the facts.
Exxon Mobil spent around 6 million American dollars in lobbying. In return, the oil company gets access to government lands, restrictions concerning environmental issues waived or repealed, and tax breaks. Without lobbying Congress, Exxon Mobil could not access essential aspects of their business; oil and coal. More taxes would mean less profit for the executives at Exxon Mobil. The lobbying of Congress is directed at one political party. More Republicans receive money from Exxon Mobil than their Democratic counterparts. The Republican agenda seems to suit Exxon Mobil better. The lobbying money does not include campaign contributions. The figures are also on a federal level, not a state level. Only on the federal level is the 6 million dollar counted.
