Research 3 April Research Methods The Literature Review ial s that a review of literature literally means to view or to look again; it may also mean a compilation of the research that has been published on a topic by recognized scholars and researchers.
2) The purpose of writing a literature review is to transmit to the reader whatever knowledge has been established on a topic, with all their strengths and weaknesses.
3) An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
4) Four reasons to do a literature review are: i) To see what has and has not been investigated. ii) To develop general explanations for observed variations in a behavior or phenomenon. iii) To identify data sources that other researchers have used. iv) To discover how a research project is related to the work of others.
5) The four stages in doing a literature review are: i) Problem formulation—which topic or field is being examined and what are its component issues? ii) Literature search—finding materials relevant to the subject being explored. iii) Data evaluation—determining which literature makes a significant contribution to the understanding of the topic. iv) Analysis and interpretation—discussing the findings and conclusions of pertinent literature.
6) Summary: The dilemma of whether American students are gaining critical thinking skills from their education and how it can be assessed has been addressed by educators often but cannot be easily done. The Critical Thinking Movement came about because of this. Although there are varied reasons which necessitate the value of learning critical thinking, numerous definitions are given for the term. Conflicting explanations, scopes, tests and propositions abound, and adherents cannot come up with a unified, all-encompassing definition of what critical thinking is. The issue of creative thinking as an essential component of good thinking is also acknowledged but cannot be cannot be evaluated. Another debatable issue brought up is whether critical thinking is subject-dependent or generalizable although this can be determined by evaluation using the general and infusion methods.
Tests may be conducted to determine cognitive skills, but the same cannot be done with virtue and disposition. Several studies were also done to evaluate critical thinking effectiveness and transfer, but none of the tests were able to measure individual virtues and disposition. In conclusion, the author is most inclined to the philosophy that critical thinking has to be concerned with both skills and disposition. The author also recommends that further studies be conducted and more tests done. Lastly, a more in-depth study on the effectiveness of various critical thinking methods should be undertaken.
