Earth maintains plenty of heat in its interior which is the main cause of Earth being geologically active as this heat initiates geological action. It causes convection of the mantle, tends to maintain the thinness of Earth’s lithosphere and melts down some of the Earth’s core which results in active commotions on the Earth’s surface. The molten core, which is the main source of Earth’s active geology supported by consistent decay of elements in the interior of the Earth through radioactivity, creates magnetic field around the Earth. This magnetic field proves that there is liquid metal in Earth’s core which is rotated by convection currents. Through this rotation and through the conduction of electricity, the liquid metal produces a magnetic field. This also drives the geological activity.
Most of the Earth’s mass is concentrated in its mantle comprising of minerals like iron and magnesium silicates. Earth’s core contains large amounts of Iron combined with Nickel and the temperature there is around 7227 degrees Celsius which is why the interior of the Earth is so hot. According to Seeds and Backman, Earth is “geologically active, with a molten interior and heat flowing outward that powers volcanism, earthquakes, and moving crustal plates” (133).
However, Earth was more geologically active in the past as it retained more heat in its interior “about three times” more than it retains now (Fichter). One can well imagine how fast the Earth’s heat engine would have been when it is so fast even now causing so many earthquakes and volcanoes.
