Discuss The Steps You Would Take To Manage A Successful Virtual Team – Coursework Example

VIRTUAL TEAMWORK By Virtual Teamwork For a manager to efficiently realize the rewards and overcome the challenges of virtual workplace, careful planning is essential. Accordingly, virtual teamwork has become a subject that holds amazing promise among both managers and employees. However, Goman points out that the concept of managing a virtual team work comes with several unique challenges, more so for those managers who had previously focused on teams which were collocated (2012). As such, it is fundamentally important for all managers to know which steps ought to be taken to manage a successful virtual team.
First, managers should assess the appropriateness of both existing and prospective workers to ensure essential virtual teamwork. Workers who cannot or are not determined to responsibly contribute to the success of a virtual team can lead to its failure. Thus, management can assess the employees to determine the various factors that can hinder team success as well as the skill gaps available. This would enable a manager to provide training and development to the workers, a factor that can result to an increased resourcefulness, autonomy, decisiveness as well as a strengthened adaptability of a virtual team.
Secondly, it is important for the leaders to evaluate the work environment and still focus on sound leadership. Since virtual teams do not necessarily dwell in definite offices, the manager should ensure that every virtual worker has the ideal tools and space that will ensure efficient and effective productivity (Miller & Rampell, 2013). For instance, managers should ensure that the virtual workers are working in an environment that are secure, have minimal distractions and contain the appropriate technology to support virtual work. Furthermore, it is important for the managers to focus on sound leadership in order to build trust and accountability, communicate their vision as well as inspire and motivate the team.
Lastly, the managers should form a working structure and ensure that they stay connected with the employees. Since virtual teamwork emphasizes on attaining good results, with less social interactions and relatively high accountability levels, then it is important that managers formulate a strong structural framework that would keep workers on track as well as offer support to them. According to the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), managers can achieve this through ensuring that they constantly stay connected to the virtual workers through the use of platforms such as Microsoft’s Lync, MeetingBurner, Skype and LogMeIn among others (2012). This would surely spur up innovation, since it would promote virtual interaction as well as stimulate inter-team discussions that increasing productivity.
Notably, not every work can be done virtually, but then today’s technological environment, a wide range of work that is knowledge-oriented need not to be confiscated in a traditional physical office. Managers can employ the use of platforms such as Skype, BBM, and Video conferencing to communicate and ensure effective team work among virtual workers. Virtual work offers businesses a new effective way of ensuring that the goals and objectives are met without spending much time or infrastructure. When effectively managed, virtual teams can offer great results and benefits to all stake holders.
