work: Biology Circulatory systems in plants and animals A circulatory system generally is a method of transportation in both animals and plants. Animals ought to have oxygen and nutrients reaching every part of their bodies. Likewise, plants need to have carbon dioxide and nutrients reaching every cell of their “body.”Thus, animals as well as plants ought to have their waste products taken out of their systems. The circulatory system is responsible for all this work (Alters, 2000).
The following are similarities between circulatory system of animals and plants. First and foremost both systems have got specialized tubes which aid in circulation. Animals have got veins, capillaries and arteries whereas plants have got phloem tubes and xylem vessels. Secondly, both systems utilize water as a medium through which substances are transported.
However, the two systems are different in the following ways; firstly, in animals, the circulatory system is controlled by the heart which is in turn controlled by the animal’s nervous system. The heart in this case acts as a pump. On the other hand, plants’ circulatory systems are operated and or controlled by gravitational force as well as surface tension from water (Akhilesh, 2009).
The second difference arises from the fact that concentration of materials being transported is always controlled (homeostasis), however, in the case of plants the concentration of materials under transportation is usually not controlled. Animals have also got specialized cells (white and red blood cells) flowing through their tubes. Plants on the other side have got water solutions merely flowing through their tubing (Alters, 2000).
Inspite of the differences inherent in these circulatory systems, they both play a critical role in ensuring transportation of various substances throughout the organisms’ systems.
