HISTORY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE The art culture is known to be very popular in England having some of the renowned artists in the likes of Hans Holbein the younger and van Dyk. Some of the most popular painting in England has their roots in the 16th to the 18th century. By observation of a painting, one can determine which generation it is. In the provided painting, some aspects are clear and through keen observation, one can determine some characteristics from the portrait.
The first general idea that pops in the mind from the first glimpse of the provided painting is that it has its origin from England or European country. This is clear from the dress code that the character in the painting is dressed in. Another aspect that helps one determine the origin is the use of the colors that the artist involved chose to use (Waterhouse, 1981). A blend of orange and red for the clothing of the character in the painting is a clear indication that the paint originates from the European countries between the 16th and the 18th century. The character stand on floor tiles, which are designed in black and white colors, this type of decorations, has its roots in Europe (Waterhouse, 1981).
From a keen observation, the painting tends to bring out a pictorial story. The lady in the painting portrays some royalty from the dressing code. She can be said to have a happy life from the chubby cheeks that portrays she has good health. In England, people of a high stature were known to carry around fans, which they used to cool themselves down. The character also wears silk clothing, which was relatively expensive during the 16th century, and only some people could afford.
From the observation of the painting, some themes are relevant to some level of which can be deduced from the paint aspects that the artist chose to use. There is a sense of style that reveals itself in the painting. This leaves one with the idea that during these times the families of the higher social status had a sense of style and fashion.
From a certain critical angle, the painting also tends to bring out questions in one’s mind. The facial expression of the lady makes the person observing to ask if the lady is sad. This is further relevant in the fact that the lady is wearing puffy clothes that do not show her body shape. Paintings are meant to bring out a story and themes from the angle of the person that is observing.
