Nursing theories give criteria with which nurses can be evaluated. Nursing theory offers concepts that support research significant to nurses, thereby creating knowledge unique to nursing. Nursing theories uphold nursing education to make it at par with the rest of academic fields. Essentially, the future of nursing is held in the nursing student’s hands (Kozier et al., 2004) Therefore, an effective foundation ought to be established. Therefore, the nursing curriculum should be designed to instill skills and knowledge on care and comfort for the patients.
Comfort is particularly essential when providing care to a patient. Kolcaba’s theory of comfort draws attention to imperative aspects of nursing, which include the patient, the patient’s environment, the care offered to them and the nurses. Kolcaba’s theory of comfort is a middle-range theory that offers a technical definition of comfort and how it can be employed to caring for patients. Kolcaba (2003, p. 251) defines comfort as the “immediate state of being strengthened through having the human needs of relief, ease, and transcendence addressed in four contexts of experience.” Such a theory gives the nursing students predispositions of discomfort of patients (McEwen & Wills, 2014). This theory holds that the unmet needs of comfort of patients in stressful health situations are fulfilled by the nurses. The integration of this theory in the curriculum would ensure that the responsibility of nurses in offering comfort and care to patients is inculcated early during nursing education. Additionally, incorporation of Kolcaba’s theory of comfort to the nursing curriculum would ensure high patient satisfaction levels (Kozier et al., 2004).
