Running Head: ADAM SMITH Adam Smith Adam Smith Adam Smith is the of the book Wealth of Nations (1776). He presented the importance of job redesign during the 18th century with regards to specialization. During that time he described the pin manufacturing that had been conducted with efficiency due to the said method of specialization. In the process, different workers are assigned to different tasks in every phase and step of the procedure. For that matter, the worker is expected to perform a specific specialized task. This increased both the quality and the efficiency of work. Smith expressed “division of labor…increase of the productive powers of labor” (Smith, 1776).
Specialization is the level of skill of the worker. It can be determined through the task being performed by the worker. For that matter, job redesign on the basis of skills improvement and training of the worker. Based on research on the effect of specialization, a significant relationship to job satisfaction and job efficiency had been recorded. For that matter, it can ultimately improve the central tradeoffs in work design (Morgeson and Humphrey, 2008).
There are different benefits in specialization of tasks. Smith discussed that through specialized works and duties, early societies were able to survive harmoniously. This is due to the fact that there is a unique niche for every job. For example, in a social setting, a hunter can profit simultaneously with the blacksmith. In a company on the other hand, more worker can have jobs in a company since one is assigned to a specific job. Specialization then can be considered ideal although Smith also discovered its limitations in a limited market (Smith 1779). In other cases though, specialization is a successful job redefinition, thus, the success of mass production and division of labor in the early part of history (Morgeson and Humphrey, 2008).
