Could Venus Become Habitable – Essay Example
05 October, Can Venus become habitable? Innumerable scientific researches have beencommencing for many years to analyze the probability of Venus lying within the habitable zone or life zone. This zone is the distance from a star where an Earth-like planet can maintain liquid water and Earth-like life on its surface and Venus should necessarily exist within this zone in order to sustain liquid water and hence, any kind of life.
According to Lorenz et al. (2001), although Venus has a small axial inclination, very little sunlight reaches the surface at the poles. With a rotation rate that is almost 117 times slower than Earths, prolonged days and nights are reported to take place on Venus. Despite the uneven distribution of sunlight cast on Venus, existence of life is made impossible by the continuously circulating winds that maintain a similarity between the hot climate on the day side and the night side. Although the surface of Venus is closer to the sun than Earth’s is, it is not as sufficiently supplied by heat as Earth. Some reports have even suggested zero possibility of the existence of water and carbon dioxide on Venus. “On the surface of Venus, liquid water is not supposed to exist because the surface temperature (480ºC) is above the critical temperature 374ºC for pure H2O.” (Lal, 2005).
Summing up, it becomes clear from this concise discussion that the search for the possibility of life on other planets within the solar system is in huge vogue today. But, claiming that these researches have led to any authentic evidence regarding the possibility of life on Venus is not possible yet.
