Exercise has always been considered beneficial for young people (children and adolescents). It promotes well being and prevents disease later in life (Faigenbaum et al, 2009). Weight training is a form of strength training which is ‘used to increase ones ability to exert or resist force’ (Faigenbaum, 2005).
With numerous young people being overweight nowadays (Medical News today, 2005), there are many exercise centers that cater to this age group; many of which include strength training into their routines (Faigenbaum et al,2009). As long as age-specific guidelines (Faigenbaum, 2007) are followed and exercise is performed under adult supervision, it has been observed strength training is a good option for young people (Faigenbaum et al, 2009). In fact, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) both recommend it for young people (Medical News today, 2005, Faigenbaum et al, 2009).
Some benefits of strength training for young people include better motor skills, increased bone strength, control of weight, improvement in cardiovascular health, an increased resistance to other sports-related injuries and even a better mental state amongst many other benefits (Faigenbaum, 2005). Strength training combined with other exercise led to an increase in overall dynamic strength in young boys after the training over a period of time (Ingle et al, 2006).
In conclusion, while there is always the risk of injury with any exercise program, it can be stated that the benefits of strength training outweigh the risks. If strength training such as weight training is done following age-appropriate guidelines and under supervision for young people, this will lead to numerous benefits later in life.
