In this unit we learned about the importance of sustaining biodiversity as one aspect of sustainability is ecological restoration. It important to ecosystems it returns contaminated sites to safe, productive use should. It looks to the future of the ecosystem as a dynamic environment of living organisms and non-living matter intricately connected by energy and nutrient flows (Baer et. al. 2005).
Four traditional reasons for the development of parks and protected areas are:
1. Wilderness protection
2. Protection of cultural features
3. Tourism and recreation
4. Sustainable use of resources
The recently added fifth reason is the preservation of species and genetic diversity (Baer et. al. 2005).
There are ways that you can aid damaged ecosystems. These include cleaning polluted waterways, reintroducing indigenous species, and removing contaminated soil (Baer et. al. 2005). The attempt is to remove the damaged elements of the system and adding lost elements to approximate unmolested conditions. Perhaps the biggest thing an individual can do to help is preventing the destruction of natural environment to begin with.
