Five Types of Instrumental Music from the Renaissance Diversity in music types during Renaissance had been expressed in several ways deemed appropriate by the people who sought to enrich their culture through elements beyond prevailing art during this period. For one, since social dancing became widely popular in the sixteenth century, pieces were created to make dance music instrumental with the purpose of accompanying actual dances which were either too elaborate or merely stylized and less exaggerated from a utilitarian perspective. Dance music type may find rendition as basse danse, branle, paran, galliard, passamezzo, saltarello, allemande, or courante among others (Renaissance).
Vocal music being played by instruments would account for another type as in instrumental ensembles playing chansons, lieder, madrigals, and even motets and mass movements which meant to entertain listeners and players alike. High ornamentation or intabulations were brought about through vocal music arrangements for solo instruments such as lute, vihuela, or keyboard (Renaissance).
Instrumental composers of the Renaissance era had as well been interested in constructing settings of existing melodies under which type falls versets or plainchant arrangements made for organ, cantus firmus tradition, and organ chorale settings at preludes or interludes. As such, this type may be exemplified through an organ mass in which organ pieces were particularly assembled to enhance every musical performance (Renaissance).
Writing sets of variations for instruments was also taken into passionate consideration. A tune repeated may possess alterations with the bass and according to repeated bass pattern, variations included the passamezzo moderno or antico, romanesca, Ruggiero, Folia, and other popular dance or song patterns (Renaissance).
With the involvement of imitation, abstract instrumental music was employed as ricercars which used to be in free-form for solo lute or keyboard, fantasia or one that equivalently acquired a piece improvised for the same set of instruments and was often based on a novel musical device, partly imitative and sectional canzonas, as well as sonata (Renaissance).
