Rodin – Research Paper Example

RODIN Rodins sculpture the Thinker is one of the most extraordinary pieces of art in human history. In execution and conception it is virtually flawless. It stands in as a symbol of contemplation and dignity. In a period of human history when conflict and violence seemed to dictate human behaviour, this piece is an oasis of calm and reason. The sculpture is an icon: it shows that human beings are intellectuals not just brutes.
Throughout our lifetimes we slowly learn the elements of language expression needed to communicate with other people. We learn how to hear and say words from the time we are born. Of course, these words are usually small and not long ones; that is because we are learning the building blocks. When we learn how to read, we begin with our ABCs. Slowly we learn grammar and how to write for ourselves—for example how to write an essay on the Language of Art. When we talk about the language of art we must start by talking about the basic elements, just as we would do so when talking about learning the English language. We must learn to do this before we can learn about interpretation and the meaning of various art works. We have to know how to walk before we can know how to run very fast. The Thinker is a work of art that teaches us all of this. There is a kind of language to this sculpture which we must learn to speak.
Firstly, we need to look at the physical parts of a work of art – how do we name and describe the visual facts? To do this we need a basic vocabulary. These are terms that can be applied to a work of art in any of the forms of art, be it photography, sculpture, or painting—these are the things we first see. The first thing we see is the medium, the material used in the work of art. Medium also refers to dimension as well. Is it two dimensions or three dimensions? Is it a painting on a piece of canvas or on a wood? Is it a sculpture in clay or charcoal? The answers to these questions are simple: Rodin has executed in bronze and marble a great artistic triumph.
