I have recently moved to China to work for a Chinese company as a project manager and am responsible for managing a number of Chinese men. The cultural considerations I need to be aware of in order to be successful are the role of women in the workplace, the role of men in the workplace, and the superior-subordinate expectations.
The role of women in the workplace may differ from that in the United States significantly. Women might be much less aggressive in Chinese culture than men as compared to the United States. It would be prudent to understand the accept mode of behavior in a given scenario. Would acting outside the norm improve or compromise your current unofficial organizational standing? It is important to recognize the accepted behavioral expectations of any gender in the workplace. The role of men in the workplace may differ from that in the United States significantly. In China men, men are comparatively more aggressive than women. In that case, is it prudent to challenge the accepted behavioral norms? Nevertheless, working relationships are not simply built on gender. Some things may be universal across cultures. Superior-subordinate relationship expectations may differ from those in the United States significantly too, but the universal archetype remains. Superiors manage and direct. Subordinates report and execute. The real impact may be more a question or racial appearance. Much as Asian women are valued as exotic in the West so too are Nordic women valued in the East.
Armed with this knowledge, I am on my way to organizational competence. My cultural considerations include the role of women in the workplace, the role of men in the workplace, and the superior-subordinate behavioral protocol. I am confident I will succeed.
