Reliability and Validity Reliability and Validity Qualitative research produces findings that are not derived from statistical procedures but are acquired form a real-world setting where the phenomenon which is researched unfolds naturally. Reliability of data refers to the extent to which the results can remain accurate over time. Reliable results are applicable and repeatable in similar studies with minimal error. The research instrument used to study one population can be applied to other populations, and similar results can be reproduced. Reliability of a research method determines the quality of research findings. A reliable qualitative research helps researchers understand a situation that would be complex. Validity of research determines the accuracy of the research method. The research method must truly measure the intended objectives and the results obtained must remain truthful. Valid results should address the research objectives accurately without leaving the researcher second guessing. The testing methods should measure the intended aspects stated in the research objectives. Research methodologies have different intentions that are supposed to comply with the stipulated hypothesis. Validity renders research findings qualified to represent the phenomena under test (Golafshani, 2003).
Rigor in qualitative research is achieved by combining both reliability and validity. These aspects create trustworthiness in research reports. For example, interviews explore subjectivity, reflexivity, and social interaction. Credible and defensible research results can be trusted and generalized to cover other subjects within the same area of research. Triangulation utilizes several research methods to improve the quality of results. Mixing different research methods into a particular paradigm improves the quality of collected results. Multiple methods of research provide diverse and multiple realities of the test subject. Incorporating methods such as interviews, observation, and recording leads to a diverse construction of realities, which increases the validity and reliability of research findings (Golafshani, 2003).
