Little doubt can be placed on the benefits of Theory Y, and that McGregor did a good thing in bringing it forward to the management. McGregor highlighted the importance of communication towards enhancing employee output in a firm. Therefore, theory Y triumphed over Theory X due to its less management on employees. This prompted some scientist to claim that Theory Y is not a motivation theory, that McGregor based his ideas on other theories.
Scientific Sources of Theory Y
1. Maslow’s Hierarchy
Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) suggested that the reason why employees go to work changes thus created the Maslow hierarchy of needs which he believed people worked up to realize the ultimate satisfaction of self-actualization. McGregor classifies the hierarchy into two orders, the lower order, also known as Theory X, and higher order, referred to as Theory Y. He proposed that better results could be obtained from the use of Theory Y.
2. Theory Z
Theory Z was developed by Abraham Maslow, William Ouchi and W.J Reddins. Ouchi described it in a form of enhancing loyalty to the firm by its employees, stability of tenure, increase productivity.
3. Human Relations Approach
Human relations movement assumed that in order to increase satisfaction among employees management had to be concerned of their welfare thus resulting to improved performance. In McGregor’s view, Theory Y advanced due to the campaigns by the human relation movement. He adopted the ideas of other human relations movement scholars such as Elton Mayo.
4. Scientific Management
Theory Y can be traced back to scientific management as the third force of psychology. This was put forward by Lillian Gilberth. She suggested that giving employees scheduled breaks would enhance their output towards the production process.
